The Jewel Heart was a collaborative project with local award-winning children’s author Barbara Helen Berger, regional musicians and Emerald Ballet Theatre. This original ballet, choreographed by EBT and based on Ms. Berger’s book, featured live music curated by EBT Music Director Judy Huehn. Ms. Huehn worked with professional artists, private music teachers and the Lake Washington School District. Over 100 professional and advanced student musicians performed multiple pieces, including Mozart’s Requiem (orchestra and choir) during the production. This was the culminating project of three years of Music Can Dance Workshops which brought dancers and musicians together to learn from each other and create art together. Ms. Berger attended the premiere, gave a wokrshop on the creative process for participating musicians and dancers, and had a gallery showing of all original artwork from the book at the EBA studio.
